It’s been hinted at in a recent teaser, but here’s my variant cover for Spider-Man #38, which officially reveals the identity of the SPIDER-SMASHER, the mysterious warrior from the future. 🕷 It’s none other than a grown-up Billie Morales—and when Miles meets her in an alternate timeline, he finds out that she is the leader of the last remaining rebellion against the evil EMPIRE OF THE SPIDER!
When I was asked to do a variant for this one, I thought it’d be a good opportunity to do something that showcased my love of all things futuristic/cyberpunk—it’s not something I get hired to do very often, and admittedly I’d rather consume media within the genre than draw it myself (all those technical details man… I don’t have the brain or the patience for it) 😂 but this was a fun opportunity to try my hand at it regardless.
Here are the concepts I submitted:
More info as well as Billie’s design sheet that I referenced for this cover can be found here. I don’t know how many of you watched Dragonball when you were younger, but this one really got me thinking about Trunks and that hilariously 80’s song that plays when they finally show his dystopian future origins:
The 80’s vision of the future sure was something. Anyway, the wo-oooo-wo-ooooo-wo-oooo-wwwoooooo part of this song was definitely playing in my head as I worked on this one. 🦾🔥
Here’s a detail shot for those of you who like to zoom in on things, as well as a logo/text-less version if you want to use it as a phone wallpaper. Thanks for reading!
Definitely getting Trunks vibes! Glad you got to work in a style you love!!
Another addition to my Jen Bartel Cover collection. Seeing the concepts I need to talk to Marvel. In my opinion they again chose the „wrong“ cover. I would have gone with C as it is more spider themed. B I can understand may be to close to Doc Ock.
